A summer tip: ACs are cool. Stabilizers aren’t!

The sultry, stifling, sweltering and breezeless summers in India necessitates the use of air conditioners for comfort and cooling. However it is not the ACs that bother us. Your AC stabilizer is a hot bed of high EMF – most of it uncontrolled.

In one of our earlier premise radiation assessments, we saw high magnetic fields (MF) from an AC stabilizer on the bed headside. The stabilizer was 3 feet away from the bed head side. Over the last 18 months, we have seen EMF from electrical appliances or from home wiring and other wiring around the premise(ELF) show up in many forms in multiple premises. While most of us are aware of cell tower radiation and cell phone radiation, we are unaware of the risks from EMF and ELF – which in most cases contribute to half if not more of our radiation exposures.

In our daily lives, we are surrounded by magnetic fields especially the earth’s magnetic field. However, magnetic fields from (unnatural) sources such as electric motors, transformers, stabilizers, power distribution lines and heavy electrical machinery can be key disruptors of our life spaces. Sleep is one of the longer duration activities in our lives, where we remain stationary for long periods of time (5 – 8 hrs depending upon how much each of us sleep). A consistent exposure to an unhealthy EMF from your AC stabilizer (while sleeping) can cause immediate and future health problems at home. The reason being that the EMF frequencies present in appliance/ device EMF and radiation from electrical sources (ELF) may disturb the brain’s resonant frequencies leading to disturbed sleep patterns, cellular fatigue and suppressed production of Melatonin (an enzyme which is key to cell damage repairs). What is all the more concerning is that stabilizers do not have any compliance mandate on EMF radiation. Therefore stabilizers can be EMF leaky depending upon the manufacturer or the age of the appliance.

Long hour exposures to magnetic fields like that from stabilizers have been associated with cancer, chronic depression, fatigue, inflammation in adults. It has more severe implications on kids leading to chromosonal anomalies, cognitive impairment leading to Autism etc. We had earlier blogged about how Autism has been on the rise over a 2-3 decadal period. Is it just a coincidence that these 2-3 decades are also associated with the rise of electronic consumerism? Expecting mothers, toddlers or infants less than 10 years age are key risk profiles – it is therefore advised that one establishes EMF as a source and risk and evaluates home appliances under this key assumption.

One of the easiest ways to neutralize EMF at home is to add distance between the known sources such as a voltage stabilizer or UPS unit and your sleep area. Unlike cell tower radiation, EMF and ELF fall with distance between source and the subject. Therefore moving your bed-head (the side of the bed where you place your head while sleeping) farther away from the stabilizer helps reduce EMF incidence at home. While it is better to be farther placed, the minimum distance needs to be 5 feet between the bed head and the source of EMF.
