Looking for an instant answer to radiation related question?
- What is EMR?
EMR (Electro Magnetic Radiation) is a natural by-product of all electrical systems – TV, Refrigerator, Motors, Radios and even house Wiring. Mobile phones and Mobile technology are the boons of the new age technology – however, its effect of life, and natural eco-systems is perhaps less researched and documented. With multiplying adoption of phones and other connected devices – EMR is now being recognized as a health risk and a pollutant – much like DDT, Lead, Mercury and Petrol/Diesel Emissions.
- I have heard about negative effects of EMR from different sources? Is it true that EMR is a health hazard?
Hardly a month goes by these days without a new study revealing that smart phones are either A) ruining your life, or B) not. The scientific debate is heated, and far from resolved, but one thing is clear: being surrounded with wireless devices with no protection, you may actually be risking your health and the health and well-being of others around you.
Different studies have linked cell phone radiation to various health problems and confirm it can damage your DNA and the nervous system, causes stress to the endocrine system (Pancreas, Thyroid, Testis and ovaries), cause memory loss, mental confusion, high blood pressure, headaches and fatigue, alters electrical activity of the brain, reduces sperm count and increases risk of Alzheimer disease.
Cell phone radiation and wireless radiation in general poses an extreme public health risk that may take years to become fully realized. Some experts go on to say that if estimates are correct, then we are on the verge of a health crisis that could cripple our current health infrastructure.
However, there is no conclusive evidence or vote on EMR as a “health hazard”.
- What are the health hazards related to EMR?
Mobile phone towers can cause brain tumors, brain cancers and seizures, paralysis, psychosis and stroke. Exposure to mobile phone towers for prolonged time can give a consistent pattern of increased risk for brain cancer (glioma and acoustic neuroma). Children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer as their brain is not fully developed. It is possible that today’s young people may suffer an ‘epidemic’ of the disease in later life. In the following picture you can see how mobile phone tower radiation can affect a brain, children and teenagers, causing mood and personality changes, depression, lack of concentration and poor academic performance. Exposure to electromagnetic fields has shown to be in connection with Alzheimer’s disease, motor neuron disease and Parkinson’s disease.Besides increase in brain tumor and acoustic neuroma, there is an increased risk of several other types of cancers following prolonged exposure to mobile phone tower radiation, such as, salivary gland tumors, uveal melanoma, lymphoma, facial nerve tumors, skin, blood, testicular and breast cancer.
- I have heard that EMR can cause Cancer? Is that true?
As of 31st May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified cell phone radiation as “Possibly carcinogenic to Humans” in the same category as lead, engine exhaust, and chloroform. Empirical evidence in the USA suggests that heavy cell phone users show a 40% increased risk of developing Glioma. However, there are no established studies and reports, that establish EMR to be directly linked to brain cancer.
The controversy over whether mobile phone use is linked to brain cancer and other severe medical problems has been likened to that of the tobacco debate in the 1950’s when it took two decades for tobacco scientists to actually admit that smoking caused cancer.
Many international studies have shown that people living within 1,300 feet of mobile towers had three times the normal cancer risk. Interphone study in May 2010 has also found a ‘significantly increased risk’ of some brain tumors. This is later substantiated by International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC), part of WHO ( World Health Organization) in May 2011.
- Who needs EMR protection the most?
Infants, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to health effects from radiation exposure than healthy adults. EMR can also affect patients carrying a pacemaker, implantable cardiovascular defibrillators (ICDs) and impulse generators and interfere with its proper functioning. It is important for everyone, especially these groups to follow protective action instructions and to seek medical attention after a radiation emergency as soon as it is safe to do so. In the very early weeks immediately following conception, the fetus is comprised of fewer cells, which are dividing rapidly, and therefore more likely to be disrupted by the effects of radiation. In turn, their development can be greatly impacted. Between the second and 18th week of pregnancy, mothers should be particularly cautious about radiation exposure. The womb serves as a safe house of sorts for the baby. It can shield the baby from the total amount of radiation the mother is being exposed to, limiting the harm caused.
- Is it true that EMR affects children the most?
EMR as a health hazard has adverse effects on all kids, adults and even in local fauna. However, children could be more susceptible to EMR related health hazards. Research shows that radiation penetrates more deeply into a child’s head due to their thinner skulls. In fact, it was found that a child’s growing body may absorb up to 10 times the radiation an adult’s body absorbs.
- Why should I be concerned about EMR and my wife’s pregnancy?
A developing fetus is the most vulnerable to the effects of radiation exposure. Therefore, women in pregnancy are also at high risk – exposure to electromagnetic fields in uterus is correlated with health problems such as ADHD, emotional problems, asthma, obesity and possibly Autism Spectrum Disorders in the offspring.
- Is there a correlation between EMR and infertility?
Research has shown that cell phone radiation-exposed human sperm die three times faster, swim significantly more poorly, become more deformed, and develop significantly more damage to their DNA. While there is no research establishing the negative effects of EMR on infertility, preliminary evidence provide pointers that excess exposure to Radiation may have damaging effects on reproductive system thereby causing infertility.
- If there is a lack of evidence, why are we overtly concerned?
Indeed, there is a lack of hard evidence on the prevalence of EMR as a major health hazard. However, if that be the case, why are so many countries around the world setting stringent standards on Radiation? The European Parliament, are starting to set stricter EMF safety limits and advising limits and advise limiting radiation exposure for children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.
There are multiple reports from various health agencies, non-profit organizations, public health fraternities that have evidenced negative effects of EMR on humans. While nothing can be stated firmly either in favor or against EMR – it is best interest that if you are concerned, you should seek protection.
