The coming age of Electro Smog
Consumerism and the increase of electronic appliances in our lives
Electromagnetic pollution may be the most significant form of pollution human activity has produced this century, all the more dangerous because it is invisible and insensible
Dr. Andrew Weil.
Over the last 3 decades, there has been an exponential increase in the adoption and widespread use of personal, home and wireless electronic/electrical appliances multiplying human exposures to Electro Magnetic Radiation (EMR). Picture the generation of 1950s – the only electronic equipment at homes in those times was a radio or a transistor. The generation of 1980s would have a TV (in rare cases – a VCR), a tape-recorder/2-in-1s (or in cases, Walkman) and refrigerator as electronic equipment at home. The generation of the 1990s had a TV, a Washing Machine, VCR/ media player, personal stereo/ Walkman, room heaters, air conditioners, water heaters and refrigerator. At the term of the millennium, consumerism and electronics massified – and the number of personal and home based electronic gadgets multiplied. Every electrical and electronic device which conducts electricity produces electro-magnetic radiation (EMR). Devices such as large screen TVs, WiFi based home appliances, washing machines and microwave ovens have a significant EMR footprint – which could be harmful for the human tissue and body. In many cases, the residual EMR from these home appliances is not particularly harmful to adults – but extremely harmful for high susceptible age groups such as infants, small kids and even elders.
Another related term, Electro-Smog refers to the invisible electromagnetic radiation resulting from the use of wireless technology and electricity based appliances around us. It is widely considered to be the 4th type of pollution. The health and ecological risk of electro-smog is widely under-stated and de-emphasized. It is widely believed that as a generation, we are currently exposed to 100 million times greater artificial EMF radiation than our grandparents were, and that exposure grows each year. While a large part of this electro-smog is attributed to high density of cell phones and cell towers, there are other sources of electro-smog which are as harmful and which go un-noticed. EMR from Metro-Rail HT wires for instance or EMR instances from a WiFi hotspot are the next generation of health hazards. High EMR risks have also been documented for people who stay in the shadow of high tension power cables / pylons.
Electro smog has the potential to become one of the largest public health risks in this half decade and beyond. The second biggest killer of Australian kids is Brain Tumour (EMR is strongly associated with this).
Our current lifestyles and the current rate of development and deployments in our homes and cities will not stop. Our societal and health care paradigm also will take its time to evolve and acknowledge the threat from EMR. Therefore, protection from EMR is an individual onus – one has to fend for himself and his family.
There is confusion on the health effects of EMR with different industry lobbies side stepping the risks. The controversy over the effects of EMR on health of people has been likened to that of the tobacco debate in the 1950s when it took two decades for health care professionals to admit that smoking causes cancer.
